To Turn a Phrase
Ha! While listening to Terry Gross’ “Fresh Air” on NPR the other day, I heard what has become my favorite phrase of the year: “Outré of incoherence.”
Justin Chang, the well-respected film critic for The Los Angeles Times, used that remark to describe director Michael Bay, the guy who barfed up the “Transformers” blow ‘em to smithereens films. Chang was actually applauding the new film “Bumblebee,” a “Transformers” prequel. Not directed by Bay.
I’m far from a fan of Michael Bay or the “Transformers” franchise. Last year’s “Transformers: The Last Knight” was a stinker. It wasn’t just me, here’s what Rotten Tomatoes said, “Cacophonous, thinly plotted, and boasting state-of-the-art special effects, The Last Knight is pretty much what you’d expect from the fifth installment of the Transformers franchise.”
Repeat after me, kids: ““Outré of incoherence.” ”
